Puerto Viejo

On the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, you’ll find the charming and one-of-a-kind fishing community of Puerto Viejo. Before entering the wilderness of the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and the immense mountainous rainforests of La Amistad Park, this is the final significant town on the route.

Puerto Viejo, being home to people of both Afro-Caribbean and indigenous ancestry, possesses a culture that is one of a kind and can only be found in this particular region of Costa Rica. A relaxed atmosphere, colorful architecture, reggaeton music, and coconut rice are the hallmarks of this region. It should come as no surprise that Puerto Viejo has become a popular destination, given that it is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the country, an abundance of verdant vegetation, and a diverse selection of restaurants and nightlife options.

Along with Manzanillo, Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, and Playa Punta Uva may be reached through a route that leaves the city and runs parallel to the shore. The restaurants, beaches, and other attractions in each of these communities are unique, but the towns themselves are more spread out.

When you get to Puerto Viejo, there are a few different ways that you may navigate the city. Renting bicycles is often ranked as one of the most popular things to do. The road that connects Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo is frequently used as a bike superhighway, and there are typically more cyclists than there are automobiles on this route. However, if you are staying outside of town, it would be beneficial to have access to a rental car. In addition, there is a public bus that travels between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo on a consistent basis.
