The western Central Valley has several private and public options, and this guide covers the main hospitals near Escazú and Santa Ana, using the hospitals’ own information and the official list of Costa Rica’s public health system. It also explains what to consider when you choose a home with healthcare in mind.

Private hospitals near Escazú and Santa Ana

Hospital CIMA

Hospital CIMA is a private hospital in San Rafael de Escazú. Check its website for current specialties and services.

Hospital Metropolitano Lindora

Hospital Metropolitano Lindora is in Santa Ana, 300 metres north of the church of Pozos. The hospital lists 24-hour emergency care, hospitalization and specialties including cardiology, paediatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics, general surgery, oncology, orthopaedics and ophthalmology.

Public hospitals (CCSS)

Costa Rica’s public health system, the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS), lists these hospitals in San José:

  • National hospitals: Hospital México, Hospital Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia and Hospital San Juan de Dios.
  • Specialized national hospitals, including the Hospital Nacional de Niños Carlos Sáenz Herrera, the Hospital de las Mujeres Adolfo Carit Eva and the Hospital Nacional de Geriatría y Gerontología Raúl Blanco Cervantes.

The CCSS also lists regional hospitals elsewhere in the Central Valley, including Hospital San Rafael in Alajuela and Hospital San Vicente de Paúl in Heredia. Whether and how you can use the public system depends on your personal situation, so ask the CCSS directly.

What to consider when choosing a home

  • Travel time at real hours. Test the drive from a home to the hospital you would use, at the times you might need it.
  • Emergency care. Confirm which locations offer 24-hour emergency services.
  • Insurance. Ask each private hospital which insurance plans it accepts, including international policies.
  • Your specialists. If you see a specialist regularly, check where that specialty is offered.
  • Access roads. Hillside homes can have steep or narrow roads, so check access in the rainy season.

Compared with the coast

The CCSS also has hospitals in coastal regions, such as Hospital Enrique Baltodano Briceño in Liberia, and Hospital Metropolitano lists locations in Liberia, Huacas and Quepos.
