Living in Santa Ana, Costa Rica: A Guide for Home Buyers

Santa Ana lies just west of Escazú, on the western side of the province of San José. Its local government describes it as a centre of commercial and residential attraction, and it is one of the areas where GAP Real Estate works. Where Santa Ana is

According to the Santa Ana local government, Santa Ana is canton number nine of the province of San José, in the southern part of the Central Region, on the intervolcanic plateau of the Central Valley. It covers 61.42 km² and borders the province of Alajuela and the canton of Belén to the north, Escazú to the east, and Mora to the west and south. The local government also notes that it is close to the country’s main airport.

The canton has six districts: Santa Ana (the head district), Salitral, Pozos, Uruca, Piedades and Brasil. The 2022 census counted 58,020 residents.

The climate

Santa Ana is in the western Central Valley. The long-term averages published by the IMN, Costa Rica’s national weather service, for that area (1961–1990) are daily highs of 26.7°C (about 80°F) and lows of 16.5°C (about 62°F), with a dry season from December to March and a rainy season from May to October. As elsewhere in the valley, conditions vary with altitude.

Shopping, dining and fitness

City Place, in Santa Ana, brings together restaurants, fashion and design shops, Studio Cinemas, a fitness centre, beauty and wellness services, offices and a Hilton Garden Inn hotel, according to its website. Multiplaza Escazú and Avenida Escazú are in neighbouring Escazú.

Healthcare

Hospital Metropolitano Lindora is in Santa Ana, 300 metres north of the church of Pozos. The hospital lists 24-hour emergency care, hospitalization and specialties including cardiology, paediatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics, general surgery, oncology, orthopaedics and ophthalmology. Hospital CIMA is in nearby Escazú, and the national public hospitals of the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) are in San José.
