The homes
  • Main house: 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Open-plan living, dining and kitchen under a high wooden ceiling, with a covered terrace looking out over the garden.
  • Two guest houses: 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom each.

The houses are built in stone and painted stucco and sit among mature tropical gardens. Inside there is a lot of local hardwood: wood-panelled walls, hand-carved furniture, live-edge headboards, a carved wooden sink and a large stone walk-in shower. The kitchen has a gas range, a full-size refrigerator and a carved wooden bar cabinet.

Water: the property has its own water meter.

What you could do with it

Three separate homes on one title give you choices. Live in the main house and keep the other two for family and visiting friends, or run them as a small guest-house or holiday rental for the visitors who come to Bijagua for Río Celeste and the volcanoes. With 10,760 m² of land there is also room to garden, plant fruit trees or keep a few animals.

About Bijagua and the area

Bijagua is a small, traditional farming town in the canton of Upala, in the province of Alajuela, sitting in the valley between two volcanoes: Tenorio to the east and Miravalles to the west. It is a little higher than the Guanacaste lowlands, so it is greener and fresher than the hot coast, with rainforest, rivers and farmland all around. The town has grown steadily with tourism, and you will find small hotels, sodas, shops and tour operators along the main road.

Río Celeste and Tenorio Volcano National Park

The big draw is Río Celeste, the river inside Tenorio Volcano National Park that runs a bright sky-blue where two streams meet. The park trail takes you to the Río Celeste waterfall, the blue lagoon, the bubbling hot pools and the spot where the colour changes. It is one of the most photographed places in Costa Rica, and it is about 10 km from this property.

Wildlife and nature on the doorstep

Bijagua is known for its wildlife. Private reserves around the town run guided walks where visitors often see tapirs, sloths, frogs and birds, and the night tours are popular. On the Miravalles side there are hot springs to enjoy, and the whole valley is good country for hiking, birdwatching and river swimming.

Getting around

Bijagua sits on the paved Route 6, which runs south to Cañas and the Pan-American Highway and north to the town of Upala. From Cañas it is an easy drive up the highway to Liberia and its international airport, so friends and guests can fly straight in.

Approximate distances
  • Río Celeste and Tenorio Volcano National Park: about 10 km
  • Cañas and the Pan-American Highway: about 40 km
  • Liberia, Guanacaste: about 70 km, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by car
